A memory from the past

Created by Angela (John`s wife) 4 years ago

Robert and I were born just before the war, so Elizabeth knew me for just over 82 years. We looked up to her as our older sister, but the closer bonds did not develop until later in life when we both had families.

Although not conscious at the time, the war years were a difficult time for any parents to raise a family. Even so my parents recognised Elizabeths` ability and encouraged her to go to Stamford High School for Girls. I have memories of my Father helping her with her Maths homework, which she found difficult, and being proud of her ability in English. They relished doing crosswords together. She was determined to be a Nurse and left school at the age of 16, throwing her "Boater" into the River Welland, which she crossed every day en route to to school. That made "Street Cred" to me, but my parents were not at all impressed!

I believe it was about 1950 and, at that time, Mum and Dad took us on our first holiday to Scarborough in Yorkshire. It was not even for a week. My Mother took Robert and I by train and although exciting, our envy was Elizabeth going on the back of my Fathers motorbike( nearly 150 miles each way)! On the last day of a very bracing week, we were walking along a breakwater when a fisherman back cast and hit a man on the side of his head with a heavy weight, gashing him badly. He collapsed and Elizabeth, who was very close to him, saw the bloody mess and fainted on the spot.........some "Nurse to be", I thought!

However, Elizabeth completed her training at Stamford Infirmary, as it was in those days, and became a very efficient SRN

Elizabeth always took a keen interest in the development of our four daughters and, subsequently our eleven grand-children. She has never missed a birthday and always with such interesting cards.

We will all sadly miss her and hope she had a quick and peaceful end, Faced with another operation, which she was very anxious about, and the Coronavirus situation, we feel relieved that Elizabeth did not have to endure this worrying time.

May she rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon her.
